چکیده

Since gravitational lensing effects directly probe inhomogeneities of dark matter, lensing-galaxy cross-correlations can provide us important information on the relation between dark matter and galaxy distributions, i.e., the bias. In this paper, we propose a method to measure the stochasticity/nonlinearity of the galaxy bias through correlation studies of the cosmic shear and galaxy number fluctuations. Specifically, we employ the aperture mass statistics Map to describe the cosmic shear. We divide the foreground galaxy redshift zf < zs into several bins, where zs is the redshift of the source galaxies, and calculate the quantity < MapNg(zf ) > 2 / < N g (zf ) > for each redshift bin. Then the ratio of the summation of < MapNg(zf) > 2 / < N g (zf ) > over the bins to < M 2 ap > gives a measure of the nonlinear/stochastic bias. Here Ng(zf ) is the projected surface number density fluctuation of foreground galaxies at redshift zf , and Map is the aperture mass from the cosmic-shear analysis. We estimate that for a moderately deep weak-lensing survey with zs = 1, source galaxy surface number density nb = 30 gal/ arcmin 2 and a survey area of 25 deg, the effective r-parameter that represents the deviation from the linear and deterministic bias is detectable in the angular range of 1-10 if |r − 1| ∼ 10%. For shallow, wide surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with zs = 0.5, nb = 5 gal/ arcmin , and a survey area of 10 deg, a 10% detection of r is possible over the angular range 1′−100′. Isolating the Decay Rate of Cosmological Gravitational Potential

The decay rate of cosmological gravitational potential measures the deviation from Einstein-de Sitter universe and can put strong constraints on the nature of dark energy and gravity. Usual method to measure this decay rate is through the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect-large scale structure (LSS) cross correlation. However, the interpretation of the measured correlation signal is complicat...

Biased Dark Energy Constraints from Neglecting Reduced Shear in Weak Lensing Surveys

The weak gravitational lensing of distant galaxies by large-scale structure is expected to become a powerful probe of dark energy. By measuring the ellipticities of large numbers of background galaxies, the subtle gravitational distortion called “cosmic shear” can be measured and used to constrain dark energy parameters. The observed galaxy ellipticities, however, are induced not by shear but b...

Measuring Ω0 with higher-order Quasar-Galaxy Correlations induced by Weak Lensing

Via the magnification bias, gravitational lensing by large-scale structures causes angular cross-correlations between distant quasars and foreground galaxies on angular scales of arc minutes and above. We investigate the three-point crosscorrelation between quasars and galaxy pairs measurable via the second moment of the galaxy counts around quasars and show that it reaches the level of a few p...

Measurement and calibration of noise bias in weak lensing galaxy shape estimation

Weak gravitational lensing has the potential to constrain cosmological parameters to high precision. However, as shown by the Shear Testing Programmes and Gravitational lensing Accuracy Testing challenges, measuring galaxy shears is a non-trivial task: various methods introduce different systematic biases which have to be accounted for. We investigate how pixel noise on the image affects the bi...

Measuring the Three-dimensional Structure of Galaxy Clusters. Ii. Are Clusters of Galaxies Oblate or Prolate?

The intrinsic shape of galaxy clusters can be obtained through a combination of X-ray and SunyaevZeldovich effect observations once cosmological parameters are assumed to be known. In this paper we discuss the feasibility of modelling galaxy clusters as either prolate or oblate ellipsoids. We analyze the intra-cluster medium distribution for a sample of 25 X-ray selected clusters, with measured...
